The young male watched the female make her way towards the empty seat right beside him. He seemed wary of her, and he quickly shifted away, dark gaze watching her every movement. He didn't,t make friends often because of the rumors about him, so he didn't even try anymore. Nonetheless, he dipped his head politely to her before he turned his attention to the teacher. His books were out, and splayed open. He tapped the tip of his pencil soiftly against the desk, causing a light tap tap tap to resonate around him. He more or less kept his attention on the teacher or the desk, but he couldn't help but look around. He angled his body towards the female and blinked, dark eyes peering into her body like one was trying to find a soul. She seemed of little interest after a few minutes so he angled his body back to the front of the class.

:: Thea ::
Thea gripped her mechanical pencil so hard that it was digging into her index finger and she knew would leave an imprint. Ignoring the tinge of pain, her eyes tried to focus on what the teacher was saying, but she could feel eyes from all corners of the room watching her. She hated being the new girl. It'd happened more than once, every time her daddy moved. This was the last time, he said, before she graduated. Thea prayed to God that he would keep his promise. These unfamiliar halls welcomed her, but she was so used to never having a real home, always moving and making new friends, then leaving them to go somewhere else. But if her Daddy kept his word, maybe she could make it work in this small town. It was quaint and cute, and everyone knew each other. She'd always dreamed of living in a town like that, where you knew the grocery clerk and the salesman on a first name basis. It wasn't like that in the city, where she came from. Now she was ready to start over, make new friends, and actually be able to stay still for once in her life.
Moving wise, that it. Her leg bobbed up and down, making her skinny jeans rub over her skinny legs over and over. But she couldn't stay still or she'd get tired. Couldn't be tired on the first day. While thinking things, she'd missed most of the teachers lecture. Thea also noticed a boy, sitting right across from her, eying her here and there. Her emerald gaze flickered to him, flickering over him lightning fast. He was cute, manly, a little gruff but nothing horrible. Her eyes cut over the edge of his jaw line, biting her lip. But it was his eyes that got her stuck. They were deep chocolate brown, but dark. His whole demeanor was dark. What did he have to hide? she wondered, noticing she was staring and quickly looking away with a blush. Now, Thea knew what it was like to get involved with a boy, and end up having to break his heart once her Daddy made her family move. She couldn't do that to another boy, scolding herself inwardly and trying to restate her focus on the lecture.

As Thea's eyes met his own, he quickly glanced away, muttering something under his breath. That girl didn't know anything about him, but when she did,he was sure she would ignore him for good. Which was fine by him anyway. He didn't need friends anymore. His sides heaved in a sigh and he scooted deeper into his seat, leaning against the solid frame of the chair. If he avoided her attempts, if and when she made any, at socializing then he could just end the problem right then and there. He started to write notes about whatever the teacher was teaching, the strokes of his hand quick and flowy. He actually tried to get good grades in school, it was about the only thing he could do anyway. When someone's gaze stuck to him too long he woulld glare at them fiercely, brown eyes warning them to back off. They weren't trying to befriend him. So went don,t they just mind their business and stick their noses somewhere else. Like a pile of crap. He knew he had to hold some form of arrogance and a tough boy attitude, so he needed to be a little gruff. Let their rumors seem true.

:: Thea :: When the bell rang to signal class being over, Thea pushed up from her desk, her things already packed up.
"I expect your essays on Ronald Dahl by tomorrow morning, beginning of class!" the teacher shouted over the ruckas. Thea didn't know what they were learning in school, and assumed she'd have to come visit the teacher after hours in order to get caught up. She stood up too fast, making herself light headed and she stepped into the desk of the boy she'd been staring at her. She blinked at him with wide eyes, mumbling a, "Sorry," before ducking her head, shouldering her bag, and smiling at the teacher as she hurried out of the room. Thea wasn't shy, but she also wasn't super out going on her first days. She'd gone through a series of 'fads' as her Daddy called them. Rough chick, badass, smoker, preppy girl, loner girl, and practically whatever else you could think of. It took a huge reality check for her when her Daddy got remarried to Sandra, making Thea realize she only needed to be one person. And that was just Thea.
Thea liked Sandra. Most people would think 'oh ew, evil step mom' status, but really Sandra was the best mom Thea had ever had. Her and her siblings lost their blood mom when they were young, but Daddy let it slip a few times that she'd done bad things. Thea didn't know what, he wouldn't tell her exactly. Honestly, she didn't really want to know. Sandra was good to her and loved her and she called her 'mom' all the same.
Along with Sandra came two half siblings, Jonah and Madelyn. That was a big shock to Thea and her only sibling Matty, who was in middle school and a good, nerdy kid. The two fraternal twins were only four and it also made Thea have to take a step back out of her 'rebellious' life in order to be an example of a big sister. Now she wasn't in any cliques and didn't want to be; she'd find friends who had good stuff in 'em that really mattered.
Slipping out her schedule again, she side-stepped by people in the halls and tried to find her next class. Gym. It read, and it wasn't too long before she found the gymnasium, stepping inside to talk to the coach. "Hi, I'm Thea Daniels, I'm new," she spoke sweetly, handing her schedule to the male athletics director. His thick mustache twitched and he gave her a slim smile back.
"Glad to have 'ya with us, kid. Just go to the girls locker room and get dressed out; there are extra changes of clothes in Mrs. Fink's office. You can't miss 'em," he pointed behind her to a door where girls were shuffling in and out. Thea jogged towards the locker room, swinging open the door, and got changed to enter back into the gym empty handed.
"Alright class!" Mr. Mansfield the gym teacher called, blowing his whistle. "We're rock climbin' today. Partner up!" he motioned towards the large climbing wall built into the gym and instantly kids started to team up. Thea bit her lips together, seeing that no one was going to pick her. Man it sucked being the new kid.

Devin merely gave Thea an acknowledging nod as she bumped into his desk. He stayed in his seat as everybody left, though. He needed to stay a few minutes late, to talk about some extra project. He soonexited the classroom and immediately strode over to Gym. He gave the teacher a slight nod, slipping past him. He was quick to change(if he had to). He didn't seem excited about the rock climbing thing, and it showed by the way he just hung out awkwardly near the back. He knew that no one usually wanted him as a partner for anythin, but it didn't bother him. Or at least it didn't seem like he did.
His dark brown eyes scanned the surrounding people, taking in details. He was surprised to see the new girl again; the one that slammed into his desk. She didn't seem like she knew about his situation so he decided that she would be the best partner. She wouldn't think that her life was in grave danger by trusting him. He silently strode over to her and settled by her side with a nod. If anyone tried to approach Thea he would give them a fierce glare, warning them to back off and find someone else. When he thought the coast was clear he grudgingly turned to her. "Hello, I'm Devin. I'll be your partner." He explained. Once his mouth was shut, he turned his back on her.

Thea looked up at the boy she'd seen from English from earlier, biting her lip with a slight blush. It was the same guy she'd almost fallen over on. Her thick black hair switched along her back as she moved it there out of her face. "Cool, I'm Thea," was all she thought to say, before putting her attention on the teacher again. Smooth, she knew.
"Alright class!" Mr. Mansfield shouted, making everyone quiet down. "We're belaying one at a time. Get your harnesses and find a station," he ordered and Thea glanced around the large gym. A few rock climbing stations had ropes already slung into the highest loop and a box of harnesses in them. More ropes hung from the really tall ceiling where other wooden structures hung from as well. There were just enough stations for each group, and Coach pointed over to the one hanging directly from the ceiling, then at Thea and Devin. "Newbie and Stevinson, you too are on the freestyle for now. We'll switch later." His thick finger pointed in the direction of two lone ropes that hung from the ceiling. Apparently the free style was where you got to just swing in your harnesses and not do any climbing. Thea was perfectly okay with this.
She waltzed over to the rope, found a harness for herself, and fitted it to her toosh so that it was tight. Though she wasn't scared of heights, she still made sure the harness was secure. Her green eyes flashed to Devin, though she didn't say anything.

I went rock-climbing once...my best friend's parents are our youth-group teachers...well we went to a place and did it, and her dad was the one who would hold my rope...GE's a pretty big guy so there was no way I was going down if he didn't,t want me to. HE DIDN'T LET ME DOWN UNTIL I WENT TO THE TOP. I refused so I stayed up there for like 15 minutes. I gave up and did it. X/

Devin nodded at Thea's reply, a little busy with glancing around. His attention turned to the teacher when he addressed the two and he nodded. He liked rock climbing and didn't like the idea of just hanging around(I had to lol). His eyes swivelled to Thea, and he dipped his head again, his long strides taking him over to her. "Have you done this before?" He asked gruffly, gathering the harness in his arms. He hooked it up to his body and turned to the young female beside him. He couldn't help but inspect her Barnes, wanting to make sure she put it on correctly. He seemed happy with her work, so he tilted his head. "You wanna go first?"

Thea gave him a raise of her eyebrows and smiled slightly. "Sure," she answered cheerily, moving around so she could tie the right knot around the loop in her harness. Somehow, the knot she was trying to make fell apart and slid to the ground. "Crap," she sighed, reaching down to pick it back up. "I haven't rock climbed in years," she admitted, trying to tie it securely in the loop near her pelvis area. Her loose basketball shorts were riding up in uncomfortable places, but there was no way she was adjusting them in front of anyone, especially Devin.
What Thea didn't notice was the whispers erupting all over the gym around them. A tall, athletic looking jock waltzed by with a preppy looking blond and snort at the partners. "Psycho," he shot at Devin, snickering a bit but using a cough to cover up what he said. Thea's head snapped up and she watched the guy with a confused look, thinking at first he was talking to her. Then she followed his trail of vision to Devin.
"What was that all about?" she questioned, still fumbling with the knot here and there while glancing up towards him.

Devin ignored the jock, but only after he gave a roll of his dark eyes. He didn't mind what any of them said. He didn't need to be a jock to feel happy, or get along with any of them. After all, he was never going to see the majority of them ever again after high school. Devin wasn't scared of most of the guys here,either. Although he wasn't popular, he was taller and stronger than most. "Don't pay attention to them." He muttered to her. "Tie the knot very well." He informed,avoiding the action of looking down. He knew her shorts were riding up, and well....being the 'gentlemen' he was, he avoided it. If someone neared them to make a comment, he just squared his shoulders and steasightened to his imposing height, daring them to just try and lay a finger on him. "You all set?" He asked gruffly.

Thea glanced around them one more time at the stares, but thought Devin was probably right. High schoolers were jerks anyways, so there was probably no real reason for their antics other than being assholes. She finally figured out the damned knot, tugging it tightly and securing it with one final jerk. "Yeah, all set," she held onto the rope, tilting her head at him with a cute smile. Thea was full of cute smiles.
Coach Mansfield sauntered by. "This is just a station to, er, have some fun. Swing by the rope, do a little flippy, I don't know," he flapped his hand and nodded to both the kids with a grunt.
Thea grinned nicely at him too. "Thanks Coach." Her eyes scanned up the long rope slinking down from the ceiling and back to Devin who would be holding her up so she could 'do the flippies'. "Are you ready?" she asked with a raise of her eyebrows. Her thick wavy hair brushed over her back again, tickling her enough to send shivers along her spine. She wouldn't dream of cutting it, but sometimes it got annoying.

Devin politely nodded to the coach. Like Thea was full of cute smiles, Devin was full of nods and grunts. He didn't respond to Thea at first, making sure he was securely and safely attached to her ropes and harness. When he straightened to his full height he nodded to her, giving her a reassuring look, something that could seem to be related to the tiniest of smiles. He made a gesture with his hand, beckoning her to do whatever. "Have you...done this before?" If he even decided to take her place in a few minutes, he wanted to know that she was able to hold onto his ropes and prevent him from falling.

:: Thea ::
Thea held up three fingers with a grin; they weren't the regular three fingers, either, but instead the middle, ring, and pinky. Maybe this represented Thea in a whole; she was strange, not normal. But she wasn't a freak either. Just kind and nonjudgmental. At least, usually she wasn't judgmental. Her thoughts carried based on her mood. More whispers around the room kept freaking her out, so that was kind of her mood. Nervous. What was so bad about being partners with this guy? Why was every staring at her? Thea was sometimes used to these kind of things because well, she was always the new girl around. But something by the tone and intensity of their talk made her think it wasn't about her.
Since she wasn't in a mean or spiteful mood, she tried ignoring others and focused back on Devin. "Three years in different schools, and I was always partnered up with the tallest guys for rock climbing. I think I can handle you, if that's what you're nervous about," she squinted her eyes and laughed a cute chuckle, positioning her hands on the rope. "But I don't think I've ever just done flips or swinging on a rope hanging from a ceiling," she tilted her head to look up the span of the rope again. "Have you?" She asked him, her green eyes flashing towards him once more.

"Hanging from a ceiling, not flips. And I've held up enough people, too many people to count." After responding with this long sentence, Devin fell into a thoughtful silence, head down turned and eyebrows furrowing. He would occasionally look up at her position, and if she went up or down he would loosen or tighten the ropes as needed. He felt the stares from many of the people around them, and had no doubt that they were talking about him. His sides heaved in a sigh and he thoughtfully scratched the side of his cheek, avoiding eye contact with Thea.{Sorry that all of this is short...}
