A shrill whistling thrummed in the air, a sound that announced the arrival of an object traveling at a high speed. A black shadow streaked across the ocean, the obvious origin of the whistling. The shadow left a trail of wake across the ocean's surface, soaring past the rocky isle known as Berk. It was a dragon - a Night Fury, to be exact, the rarest of all known dragons. Night furies were the most powerful of all the dragon species, with their bodies perfectly proportioned to allow for the fastest flight. The night fury never shows itself, and never misses; it was perfection. This particular night fury was the companion of a young Viking, the 'Pride of Berk', known as Tallak. Tallak was laying flat against the night fury's back, streamlining the dragon further as they zoomed along. The dragon rolled, tilting his wings and tail fins to adjust his flight pattern in order to avoid the whale-like beasts that surfaced. Tallak leaned forward, pulling his legs beneath him to slip his feet into the stirrups that adorned the dragon's saddle. The dragon's wings flared out fully, his tail fins flexed, and with a downward stroke of the appendages that gifted flight, the night fury launched himself straight into the sky, swinging into a spiral with a twist of his body. The Viking released a whoop of excitement, holding onto the the little handle built into the saddle as he leaned back, staring at the ocean below him. The night fury roared happily, allowing his wings to go slack, causing them to drop towards the tossing seas. The night fury - who was called Toril - twisted sharply, flaring out his wings to catch the wind before the collided with the water, sending them soaring ahead once more. Tallak leaned forward, against the night fury's body, streamlining himself to allow Toril to gain speed. What Tallak did not notice, however, was the large ship that slid from the cover of the fog that clung to the tossing sea's surface.
Standing at the ship's bow, watching the rare dragon careen across the ocean, was one of the more common Vikings; someone who hated dragons, believed them to be evil. He was a trapper, and he saw his next target; the rarest of the rare, one of the last Night Furies. The burly Viking lifted a hand, curling his hand into a fist suddenly. One of his crewmen turned a large ballistae, firing a rope with large weights tied to each end.
Toril released a roar of shock as something slammed into his tail, sending him flying. Tallak was sent one way, his dragon the next. It happened too fast for Tallak to even react; one moment he and Toril were flying along, the next, the ocean was closing over his head, saltwater pouring into his lungs. Toril!

Sorry for poofing >.< My cat kept meowing at me and I had to figure out what she wanted lol
The sound of light laughter floated along the wind as one particular rider and her dragon flew close to the ocean at high speeds. So close in fact that the girls feet nearly sat in the water, and the salty ocean spray was a constant brush along the girls skin and dragon. This was the farthest they’d gone from home yet, and the pair were sure to get in much trouble the second they made it back home. Eira couldn’t bring herself to care though. Not while she was with her own night fury, Aloreli. The very rare and fast dragon sometimes seemed to take charge when the two went exploring, and at this rate it seemed they would be out until sunset. Eira leaned forward on her dragon, reaching her arm down in an attempt to actually touch the blue ocean water below her. Instead she let out a surprised gasp as a whale-like creature began its swim to the surface. They didn’t have those around the island in which she lived, though she’d seen them before. With a quick pat along her night fury’s shoulder they quickly shot back into the sky and away from the large water creature. Aloreli took over, using the great strength in her wings as they soared upwards and into the clouds. Eira seemed to relax as they settled into the clouds, resting her head along her dragons back in an almost wresting sort of position. She was so comfortable and confident in Aloreli that she could have fallen asleep there. The night fury seemed to have a different idea though. With a quick tilt of her tail fins, Eira nearly fell out of her dragons saddle. She sat up quickly, not too happy with the night furies idea of a joke only to realize Aloreli had been trying to get her attention. Up ahead, just barely seen through the clouds, was a large ship. Now a days those with ships were typically only the dragon haters, and with this in mind Eira instructed her dragon to remain in the clouds. Hopefully the two wouldn’t be seen from up so high.
As it turned out they didn’t have to worry. In the next second the Viking captain lifted his fist in the air and the next thing she saw was a large net fly from the ship and into an object farther off and in the sky. Eira wasn’t quite sure what to do but her stubborn night fury seemed to choose for her as it let out a roar before zooming towards the ship. Good job on remaining hidden.
Aloerli sent a ball of blue fire the captains way before once again flying close to the waters surface. The Viking girl searched into the dark waters, hoping to see some sign of where the dragon, and perhaps its rider, had fallen.

The captain's roar of anger could be heard for quite a bit of distance around. The crew rushed to put out the fire, desperate to save their vessel.
Tallak surfaced, gasping and choking, coughing up a mouthful of saltwater. "Toril!" he rasped, searching desperately for his dragon. The night fury in question surfaced as well, crying his fear and pain. He hurtled himself into the air, wings beating strongly, only to fall back into the water uselessly. He repeated this process several times, trying to get free of the ocean's grip, trying to rescue his rider, but his tail had been irreversibly damaged. The right fin on the dragon's tail had been sliced clean off, likely from the spiked weight that had been attached to the rope. Tallak turned about, searching for his dragon, for his best friend. "Toril!"

Eira ignored the yells and roar of a spreading fire coming from the ship behind her. She was more worried about what had fallen into the water. And then her question was answered.
First came the rider, a bit farther away then from where the splash had originated from. She could hear him shouting something but couldn't quite figure out what it was he was saying. She held on tightly to the handle attached to the saddle as Aloreli shot forward and towards the Viking. Once they reached them the night fury flew in place, hovering above the boy in the water. A small pale hand shot out towards the viking below. "Grab on!!" she yelled, glancing over her shoulder to check on the ship. What she spotted instead though was something she had not expected to ever see. Another night fury. And one that was clearly hurt in some way.

Tallak reflexively reached up, grabbing Eira's hand. He yelped as his shoulder was nearly dislocated when he was jerked out of the ocean. Toril cried, roaring his despair as he splashed in Tallak's direction. "My dragon!" Tallak did not take into account that his rescuer was riding a night fury; he was only concerned about his dragon. As soon as he was close enough, he jerked free of Eira's grip, splashing back into the water next to Toril. The dragon and Viking boy clung to each other, relieved to know the other was okay. "Why can't you fly?" Tallak murmured, resting his hand on the night fury's nose. The dragon rumbled softly, unable to speak the Vikin's language.

Eira had to use all her strength to help Tallak out of the water and onto her own dragon. Once he was settled she turned Aloreli towards the sound of the familiar roar from a night fury and headed that direction. She tried to keep the surprise from her face but probably didn't do too well. She watched as Tallak slipped back into the water, wanting to help but not quite sure how to take both viking and dragon back to shore. And as she watched the two reunite she realized another thing. Where did they come from? Because they definitely weren't from her island. "Are you ok?" she felt a bit stupid even as the words slipped from her mouth. They obviously weren't ok but it was just the typical question to ask... so she did.

"I don't know," Tallak murmured. "Toril can't fly, and I'm not sure why. Stupid trappers." Toril grunted, managing to float in the ocean. His wings beat at the water, keeping him afloat. He nudged his rider, thrumming lightly. Tallak sighed, crawling back into the saddle. He paddled lightly with his hands, trying to help his dragon keep them aloft. "My island is south. I guess I should head that way. Thank you..." It was then that he noticed the girl's night fury. His mouth dropped open.
