Alyssa had almost decided not to come. There were plenty of other things Alyssa could've found to do, she could be focused on details for her wedding. Her wedding to another man, who she wasnt with right now, who had never kissed her, never made her feel as fully electrified as the one she was with now. No matter how long ago it had been, no matter how much had happened since. Alyssa knew, there would never be any other guy she loved the way she had loved Ryan. Trying not to let this show through, the blonde stepped inside, nodding her thanks to Ryan who was holding the door open for her. Alyssa wanted to say so many things, ask him so many things about what his life had been these past five years, how he'd gotten here, what had happened when he left.......why he'd left her. As hard as Alyssa tried, as smart as she knew she was, she had no idea. It didn't add up to her, why would ryan break up with her? They were practically living together, planning their lives together, she loved him. But that shouldn't matter to her now, after all she was getting married in a few days to Jason Kennedy who was rich, handsome, kind, and smart. He had his life together and now Alyssa did too. But Ryan, Ryan didn't fit with her life right now. Clearing her throat Alyssa looked up to see a pretty looking girl, leading them to their seats, taking the menu carefully she started to browse or rather distract herself so she wasnt staring at Ryan and thinking about Ryan and thinking about what had passed between the two of them five years ago. Now he was talking and there was no more avoiding. Putting a smile on her face, Alyssa looked up. Finding herself unable to give an answer that made sense so she just settled for, " I've been doing alright.you?"

Ryan smiled slightly, looking up at her. For a short moment, he found himself completely head over heels in love with her. She was perfect, her blonde hair falling in a veil over her cheeks, eyes scanning the menu thoughtfully. She just looked so perfect, that he wanted to lean forward and sweep a stray hair away from her forehead, and smooth the creases in her brow with his thumb. But he didn't do any of this, he just looked down at the menu, thinking slightly.
"I've been okay." He said quietly. The ups and downs life. He had been through a lot. He'd gone off to Syracuse University on a couple of scholarships, staying right here in New York. He loved it here, the city, the people. But complications came up. Things he couldn't avoid. He sighed slightly, glancing up at the walls at the paintings. "How's your family?" He added, before she could press on of what 'okay' meant. He looked back to her, and then their conversation.
"Hey folks, I'm Zach, and I'll be taking care of you-," Ryan looked up and felt frozen. Standing there looking like he'd just been slapped with a cold fish was a former friend of Ryan's. "Ryan fucking Callahan," a icy voice slithered out from the handsome male standing next to the table. Ryan swallowed.
"Zach, wow, um, this is-," He breathed slightly, looking panicked. Zach raised his brows, dark eyes falling on Alyss.
"Oh, is this your new flame?" This waiter said angrily, he glanced at her, lips curling up into a sneer. "Good luck with this bastard, honey. Don't like him too much, he's a 'free bird,'" Ryan winced. "He'll shatter your heart," And Ryan opened his mouth to say something, but his mouth just moved up and down, soundless. Then Zach's hand connected with Ryan's cheek with a hard smack.
A red hand print was etched onto Ryan's face, leaving his face stinging. He lifted a hand, feeling the raw skin. "Ass," Zach hissed and whirled around, stalking away from the table. He tossed his apron on the counter and stalked out. By this point, they'd gotten the attention of most of the café. Ryan looked up at Alyss, wincing as he rubbed his cheek. "Oops," he said softly, looking a bit guilty.

Alyssa thought she had to be going crazy for a minute. Feeling the way Ryan was looking at her just stirred up a whole new mess of butterflies in her chest. I made no logical sense for him to make her feel that way not after him crushing her heart and making her run away to another continent to get away from her sadness. But apparently that didn't matter to her heart or her brain because having Ryan look at her made Alyssa want to reach out to him. Or something. Hearing him speak Alyssa frowned slightly, a crease forming in her delicate brow. From the way he spoke, Ryan definitely didn't sound like he was okay. Although to be fair, Alyssa wasnt exactly 'alright' either. Even still she was concerned, you didn't get over caring for a person you were attached to like Alyssa was to Ryan. Before Alyssa could manage to ask Ryan about what okay meant, he had changed the subject to her family...which was sort of an uncomfortable topic with Alyssa these days. Alyssa didn't hate her parents they had always been busy, since she was a child they would be away for days on end and Alyssa was left with nannies. Now that was fine, only as soon as she got engaged to Jason they played the part of doting parents who adored her and had always been great parents who were close with alyssa. But that was a lie and they all knew it. Before Alyssa had a chance to say any of that some guy had come up, for a moment it looked like he was going to be nice and friendly and take their order. But he turned and recognized Ryan suddenly he started snapping and getting angry. He was calling Ryan a bAstard, actually warning Alyssa not to get involved with him. Which scared the crap out of her, so she did nothing. Alyssa just sat there in silence and watched as he slapped Ryan straight across the face, it was reminiscent of the one time Alyssa had hit him herself. But that didn't matter now. Trying to collect herself as best she could, Alyssa spoke up. " Ryan, who the hell was that guy and why does he look like he wants to murder him.

Ryan looked up at her. He remembered the time she'd slapped him hard across the face. Nothing against her, or the way girls hit, but Zach's was almost a punch. Zach was a hockey player, and a physical guy, not someone you want to fight. He winced, taking his hand away from his cheek, where it glowed an angry red. He looked away from Alyss, watching as a barista went after Zach. He sighed.
"His name is Zach Kaplan. In college we played on the hockey team together, and, er," He glanced at her, wincing slightly. "We were best friends for four years. A couple of weeks before we both graduated, I guess he kind of 'came out' to me," he said, placing came out in air quotes. "He's technically, I think, it's called pansexual." Ryan said. "And that he, er, I guess, loved me." He glanced back at the door. "But I was oblivious until then, and when he tried to kiss me, I kind of freaked out." He winced again, glancing down at his hands. "And said some pretty disgusting and horrible things. He left our dorm and didn't speak. Then we both graduated and I haven't seen or spoken to him since." He said softly.
He glanced up from under his lashes. "So, that's why he wants to literally murder me." He added, looking sheepish. "Yeah." He said, glancing away. He still felt like he was getting stares, but didn't look at the other slightly awestruck costumers in the shop.

Alyssa partly wanted to get up and leave now, chose not to hear him out. Technically it'd only be fair considering he never gave her a chance to fight him on leaving, never have her a chance to convince him that they were meant to be together and he couldn't just walk away from her. But instead Alyssa sat and listened, she wanted to hear him out. Give Ryan the chance to tell her something that would make her understand how angry and sad that boy had been and be okay with it. Hearing what Ryan had to say, Alyssa found herself softening just slightly. While what Ryan had done in acting out towards zach was completely deplorable and terrible, Alyssa could see how much he regretted it all. And that was enough for her to sit with him and understand, try to continue with the conversation. Alyssa didn't look at Ryan as he spoke, she didn't want him to see her turning this over in her mind and processing what had just happened. When he finished, Alyssa mustered a small genuine smile and looked up at him. " well, although I think he's got every right to be mad at you. I'm glad you told me and I get it. I've known you since we were in grade school, Ryan. I know your not capable of truly being a person that believes the things you must've said. So I understand" she murmured reaching out and putting her hand over his. It had been a complete accretion, Alyssa had never intended to do that. But it was so instinctive for her to comfort Ryan that touching him was just a reflex. But alyssa couldnt find it in herself to pull away, it was too much. She could only hope he wasnt feeling the same electricity she did from the touch.

He shivered slightly under her touch. He didn't move away, he did move, only to claps his fingers around her hand and squeeze gently. "He does." Ryan whispered. "He has every right to murder me in my sleep, fuck," He sighed, putting his head in his free hand. He closed his eyes, and saw the look on Zach's face. A look of complete horror first, and then his mouth dropped open. Zach then stepped back from Ryan, slipped and fell slightly awkwardly onto the couch. Ryan had left then, going into his room to pack. He remembered returning to the living room, glancing back at Zach and seeing him curled up on their couch, sobbing and shaking and rocking like a child.
Now, it broke his heart. He hadn't been able to handle it, and he didn't know why. He'd never had a 'gay' teammate, and he hadn't even known what a pansexual was. He'd literally smashed any chance of friendship with Zach, and then on top of that, crushed every inch of his heart into tiny little pieces. He knew what it felt like, how Zach reacted was how Ryan had felt for weeks on end after he broke it off with Alyss. "Thank you," he murmured, looking up into her face and smiling sadly. He looked down at their hands, his stomach flip flopping and his skin tingling. He swallowed slightly and another waitress came over.
"I guess you know Zach?" She was young, about eighteen with straight hair and mousy looks. She was a bit timid. Ryan slid his hand out of Alyssa's. He glanced up at her, clearing his throat, nodding.
"Ah yes, should we leave?" He asked, tilting his head slightly. She shook her head roughly.
"No, no, it's okay. Zach's gone for the day. I'll let y'all sort it out. So what can I get you?" She said, smiling weakly. They ordered, and she left. Ryan glanced back to Alyss, with an attempt at a smile.
"So, what have you been doing the last five years?" He asked, genuinely curious, he carefully skirted around the whole breakup topic.

Alyssa started to feel totally guilty or at least the one tiny part of her brain that was still thinking logically started feeling guilty. But in spite of this, Alyssa didn't pull away she smiled and squeezed his hand back. She tried to convince herself that she was only doing it because he needed to be comforted but in her heart, she just wanted to touch him, wanted to feel that electricity and see if maybe just maybe it was still there, unfortunately it was and had her doubting exactly what she was doing with Jason. Alyssa could tell from the look in Ryan's eyes that he was somewhere else, reliving the experience that was causing him pain. It hurt her too, seeing him like that because it was just like all those times he'd been smacked around and ended up at her door. But part of her was also mad. He was upset about wronging an old college friend of his but he hadn't expressed any of what him breaking her heart five years ago meant. Hearing him thank her Alyssa was snapped from her daze and nodded " sure, anytime" she murmured smiling back weakly. This was all too much but she couldn't step away. Thankfully a shy, quiet looking girl approached and spoke to them, but that meant Ryan's hand leaving her which made Alyssa feel cold all of a sudden inside. Thankfully they weren't being asked to leave so at least this outing wouldn't be totally ruined by a confrontation from Ryan's past. So maybe this would all be okay. But then of course Ryan had to ruin it all by asking her how she'd been the past five years. Alyssa had a choice, she could leave out what had made her life what it was and just give him what he'd want to hear. Or she could tell him the whole truth, which was the only thing she felt okay doing. When she explained there was no malice in her voice, only honesty. " when you broke up with me I wanted to get away....so I ended up saying yes to Oxford. So I went to college in England. Started over, and eventually my life got back together. I made some great friends, met great people....even Jason. So in a way maybe what you did got me here. I don't hate you for it, Ryan. I was.....I was bad, for a long time. But eventually I had to go on and live my life. Couldn't let it stop me from living my life, and no here we are...you?"
